Pluto Effluent Treatment & Demineralisation Plants, WA

The Client

Woodside

Woodside is one of Australia’s top ten companies by market capitalisation, and the nation’s largest publicly-traded oil and gas exploration and production company. It is Australia’s largest independent producer of oil and gas and one of the world’s largest producers of LNG.
The Pluto LNG onshore Gas Project includes extraction, treatment and liquefaction of natural gas from the North West Shelf, 180 km NW of Karratha. This mega-project, worth 12 billion A$, is the single largest investment in Australia to date. Over 260 modules were assembled in Asia with over 10,000 people involved (exc. Suppliers) around the world.

The Client's Needs

Woodside’s constructed a new $12 billion Pluto LNG Project near Karratha for LNG production, providing regional markets with a clean energy option, low in greenhouse gas emissions.
Produced water from the gas field needed be treated to meet stringent environmental requirements from the Western Australian EPA (Environmental Protection Authority).
The Effluent Treatment Plant has to remove hydrocarbons from oil contaminated water and provide a means to reuse, after re-treatment of site wastewater and water runoff.

Veolia's Solution

  • Tilted Plate Interceptor (TPI)
  • Macro Porous Polymer Extraction (MPPE)
  • Neosep® Membrane Bioreactor (MBR)
  • Chillers & Cooling Systems (Trane / Dalkia)
  • Filtration & Advanced Oxidation Systems
  • Activated Carbon

The demin plant removes suspended solids and dissolved solids from reuse water for use as gas turbine washing and make up water to the heated water system, the acid gas removal unit and the closed loop cooling water system. The Demineralisation Plant process includes:

  • Reverse Osmosis
  • Ion Exchange
